This hands-on, one-day workshop is designed to teach the basics of food, product and still life photography. You will learn how to work with light to help tell stories, as well as see how to work with a food stylist. This course is held in a professional studio and students will be shooting during the course to apply what they’ve learned.

This course requires a DSLR camera and knowledge of how to use it. You must understand depth of field and how to shoot in manual mode.

Topics to be covered include:
1. Principles of food photography.
2. A short history of still life photography.
3. Lighting for form texture highlights and shadow.
4. Food-styling demo: the simple essential tricks to make the ordinary extraordinary.
5. The simple tools used to modify light to create a mood.
6. Creating dimension when shooting products and still life.
7. Telling a story with props, backgrounds and lighting.
8. Hands on assignment shooting in the studio.
9. Processing the files and showing them in class for critique.
10. Processing your files for impact.

Course requirements:
1. DSLR camera.
2. Knowledge of shooting in manual mode and understanding of depth of field.
3. Laptop with Photoshop and Bridge or Lightroom.
4. Plenty of paper and a pen for note taking.

Rick Gayle is a still life, food and product photographer based in Phoenix, Arizona. He started his own studio, Rick Gayle Studio, in 1975 and has been shooting both commercial and stock photography ever since. He has taught at the Art Institute of Phoenix and Phoenix College. Some of his clients include Honeywell, General Motors, Intel, Dial and Chevron Texaco.

Kim Krejca is a professional food and prop stylist based in Phoenix, Arizona. She has worked in the field of advertising for more than 25 years in both Chicago as well as Arizona. She has worked for a number of large clients including Cold Stone Creamery, Blimpie's, AJ's Fine Foods, Hilton Hotels and more.
